Soft landscape complete in Leicester City Centre

From ground preparation to planters alongside Leicester residential development

Specimen shrubs and planters at The Aspen, Conduit Street, Leicester

Heading to the East Midlands this Summer, JPL have completed the soft landscape work in the grounds and on the roadside frontages of The Aspen, a student accommodation block close to Leicester City Train Station.

Sourcing and supplying specimen 5 litre shrubs, hardy and suitable for their roadside and planter locations, the J Paxman Landscapes team provided the topsoil and bark mulch to finish the project.

Works completed alongside Watkin Jones, main contractor, (see previous student accommodation project in Huddersfield) and for property development company CKC Limited.

Conquering Snowdon for charity

Along with The Newsome Panther Rugby team and supporters, Justin reached the pinnacle of Mount Snowdon on 30th April. Raising funds for Bev Neadall and MND, the charity event was very well supported and thankfully helped by the weather on the day! Justin himself takes up the story of how they reached the summit…

Andrew and Roy (fellow charity walkers) pushed me up the mountain, fuelled by a constant supply of jelly babies! I was the last person off the mountain but so proud to have reached the top, and for such a good cause. Encouraged again on the descent (and helped a little by a weeee dram from Andrew’s hip flask!), that definitely helped soothe my downward journey!

We took it very slowly on the way back down, being careful not to lose footing or slip on some treacherous parts. Got back safely, just in time for the bus home! Weather was perfect, managed to survive without blisters but OH I’ve some sore leg muscles now! Well done to all involved – a great experience for an even greater outcome – nearly £3800 raised to support Bev and her family in their future challenges.”

Walking for Bev with Newsome Panthers

On 30 April 2022, our Director, Justin Paxman, will be putting on his walking boots once again. Justin is no stranger to walking for charity, walking over 75 miles and raising £1000 in December 2021 in memory of his mum, who he sadly lost to Alzheimers last year.

£10,000 target to support Bev Gleadall

This time, Justin is this time joining supporters and fundraisers looking to help raise £10,000 for Bev Gleadall for alterations to her home after her MND diagnosis. Bev and her family are lifelong Rugby supporters, and are calling on friends, family and local support to raise funds to help improve Bev’s home and to allow her the maximum mobility and independence as she and her family face the challenges ahead.

Walking up Mount Snowdon

Along with The Newsome Panther Rugby team and supporters, Justin will be walking up Mount Snowdon on 30th April and will be promoting and shouting about the experience to help Bev hit her fundraising target.

Following in the slipstream of Phase 1 landscaping at the new Ferrari showroom in Leeds, JPL will return in February 2022 to drive planting forward in the project’s second phase.

Trees, Seed, Turf and Perimeter Planting

Preparing the site initially for grass seed and turfed areas, JPL will return for Phase II next year to complete a varied and functional soft landscaping plan including large trees, hedging and swathes of shrubs for structure and perimeter protection and boundaries.

The Planting Plan

In a soft landscaping delivery that is second-nature to the JPL team, the landscapers will manage the project which includes every planted element from extra heavy standard trees to hedging and ground cover.

Cornus Midwinter Fire
Cornus Midwinter Fire for winter stem interest

The plan includes swathes of single species in junipers and laurels. For winter stem colour, the palette enjoys winter favourites Cornus Midwinter Fire and Photinia Red Robin alongside Corylus avellana and Spiraea thunbergii.

The hedging and shrub choice has two functions; structure and protection. Hebes, lavenders, Rubus and laurel provide the height, form and foliage contrast whilst the hawthorns, berberis , Chaenomeles and Prunus spinosa afford the schemes a protective layer around perimeters and boundaries. Native shrubs and a formal and defendable hedge complete the selection.

Updates on planting will follow in the Spring.

Huddersfield College & school boundary improvements

New fencing and gates completed

Preparing a site for new landscaping materials, whatever they may be, is often as critical as the delivery and construction itself. Huddersfield New College and Salendine Nook High School occupy a large site within Huddersfield town. The estate management team have been working with J Paxman Landscapes to improve and secure the boundaries with new fencing and gateways.

Clearing the way for new fencing and gateways

After clearing the site of vegetation and debris, the J Paxman Landscapes team worked with Yorkshire-based contractors Davison Fencing to erect the 1 mile long boundary fencing, main security gates and side access.

The old fencing was removed and disposed of safely as part of the project, completed at the end of September 2021.

Huddersfield High Street Planters

Social distancing with natural planting from JPL

Helping the high street return to a new type of normality, JPL have been busy planting up wooden planters with shrubs in Huddersfield town centre.

The Planting List

Choosing plants that are both robust and resilient, the planters are multi-faceted, adding a welcome splash of nature to the urban environment whilst working hard as screening and social distancing markers as the town returns to some semblance of activity this Summer.

The planting pallette includes hardy shrubs, perennials and trees, offering a combination of foliage interest, form, shape and height from planter to planter.

The Shrubs

  • Buxus sempervirens
  • Viburnum tinus Eve Price
  • Photinia x fraseri Little Red Robin
  • Pinus Mugo Gnom
  • Pittosporum tenuifoliium Tom Thumb

The Perennials

  • Heucherella Art Nouveau
  • Salvia nemerosa Sensation Deep Blue
  • Persicaria affinis Darjeeling Red
  • Calamagrostis x acutiflora Overdam
  • Santolina chamaecyparissus Small Ness

The Trees

  • Amelanchier lamarkii multi-stem
  • Sorbus aucuparia Cardinal Royal
  • Prunus hillieri Spire

Natural barriers

The car-free zones and pedestrian areas of the central shopping area are lined with the planters, manufactured and supplied by Big Red Construction and expertly planted by the JPL team.

Extra care and attention was shown to the larger tree planters, requiring underground securing, staking and irrigation for each tree.

JPL have been responsible for the plants’ initial maintenance and aftercare to ensure the healthiest of establishment. This has been handed over for the longer term to the Council themselves to manage.

Classic porcelain paving for Huddersfield haven

Private garden transformed with paving, planting and pathways

Homeowners looking for a garden transformation might have just the smallest inkling or the biggest creative concepts in mind before they commission a designer or landscaper. That is why we find it helps immensely to translate hopes and dreamscapes into a visual interpretation of your garden plans.

Design and build

This rear garden transformation in Shepley followed this journey from design to build to completion. Armed with a visual design and concept agreed from the original brief and discussions, the build plan could be agreed at the earliest stage. This allowed the transformation to progress with both client and designer confident in the end goals and how it would be achieved.

In March 2021, JPL started to guide the garden in its first steps towards completion. The old pathways were removed and old turf replaced, ready for porcelain paving, manicured lawns, seating and a water feature.

Preparation is key

With grand ideas agreed, ground cleared, old paving and vegetation removed, the build phase could begin in earnest. The customer wanted clean, crisp lines reflected in the paving, pathways and lawned areas. Planted pockets would flank the garden with shrubs and perennials for seasonal and foliage contrast. A water feature would add interest and movement and a further seating area would sit at the foot of the garden with views across the countryside beyond.

The Transformation

Using the finest Marshall Symphony Classic porcelain paving in barley finish for the opening and circular patios and Fairstone cropped porphyry setts in the pathways to complement the low level stone walls, the hard landscape is pinpoint perfect. The paving is sleek, clean and slip-resistant.

The new planted beds will establish and form natural framing around the landscape, with lighting adding evening focus on features and space for outdoor entertaining.
