Skyline: A Yorkshire Roof Garden | Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2015

A Yorkshire Roof Garden | Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2015

Once again, Paxman Landscapes will be creating a landscaping showpiece at this year’s Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2015.  This April, the landscaping team will be constructing “Skyline: A Yorkshire Roof Garden” in partnership with Kilmartin Plowman and Partners Architects (KPP).

The garden will be set in front of a backdrop of York’s skyline  and will blend crisp lines and contemporary shapes with swathes of foliage and subtle floral colours.  Restful, relaxing, serene, soothing – a place to reflect and inspire, the garden has been designed to create a rooftop retreat from the ground up in any town house garden.   It is intended to inspire gardening enthusiasts to create their very own Yorkshire skyscape, right in their own backyards.

Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2015The garden will be awash with flower and foliage and flows from corner to corner.  A trickling water feature and cascading stone path meander amongst the design, drawing visitors in.

The Skyline garden features two distinct bespoke seats – one of galvanised steel, one of traditional oak timber – both perfect to take in the views and enjoy the pool and rill cascading onto the pebbles.  The stunning York backdrop takes you high above the rooftops beyond with superb views of York Minster.  A simple planted frame for climbers gives height at the rear of the garden and rises above the mix of gravel and clay pavers which lead into the natural Yorkshire stone steps towards the cobbles and ornamental tree in the foreground.

Festooned with whites, creams and airy colours, the herbaceous choices and flowering shrubs are intertwined with purples, mauves and blues, creating a feeling of air, space and light, as if atop the roofs of York.  Swathes of grasses bring movement and texture to the beds and a statement ornamental tree punctuates the perfect lawn, with subtle under-planting beneath.

“Skyline: A Yorkshire Roof Garden” will take pride of place at this year’s Show, following the success of the Tropical Courtyard the Paxman’s team brought to life last April at the same event.

Kilmartin Plowman PartnersJustin Paxman, Director of Paxman Landscapes and project manager of the show garden’s construction said: “The concept and realisation of our Tropical Courtyard at last year’s ago was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our team’s work and the whole event was a resounding commercial success for us.  This year’s theme, inspired by Helen Plowman of KPP Architects, illustrates what can be achieved with professional landscaping in Yorkshire.”

Paxman continues: “Our partners in the Skyline garden creation are Tony and Helen Plowman of KPP Architects and we will be transferring the show garden to their home after the Show.  Our design and garden construction can be translated into any garden landscape – we really hope we inspire the Show visitors to consider the Roof Garden for their own landscaping plans.”
