Loving landscapes since 1988

Justin and Nathan Harrogate

“I want to become a Director of the business, to be at the very heart of the decision-making progress and to be in the best position to shape the future of J Paxman Landscapes. We are looking at recruitment streams, apprenticeships and our own in-house training programme development – and I want a seat at the table and a voice that reflects the challenges on site as well as the opportunities.” – Nathan Paxman

Justin Paxman, Director, J Paxman Landscapes

My journey in landscaping began nearly 40 years ago after an apprenticeship at Kirklees Council, where I gained practical experience across play areas, nurseries, propagation, and grounds maintenance. In 1999, with experience, a van, and a partnership with a stonemason and garden designer, I co-founded Paxman Landscapes UK From small domestic projects, we quickly grew by focusing on quality, safety, and right-first-time delivery, earning trust from designers and clients alike.

My background in local authority work gave me an edge in budgeting and estimating. By helping develop an estimating software package, I created a plant and pricing library still in use today, allowing us to price competitively while maintaining standards. A degree in Landscape and Garden Management at Askham Bryan College transformed our outlook, enabling Paxman Landscapes to move from a small gardening business to a competitive commercial contractor, winning tenders, securing accreditations, and building lasting client relationships helped us establish a strong reputation across Yorkshire and beyond.

Today, we focus on commercial landscaping, regeneration projects, and business parks, while still excelling in show gardens. With a six-strong core team, support from local subcontractors, and my son Nathan stepping into leadership, Paxman Landscapes is a growing, people-focused business built to last for the next generation.

He is taking an increasing role as ambassador of the business, and is looking to develop his business and management skills to be able to help Justin drive the business forward into a new age. He has already taken the business into new directions with video, drone and social media content.
