March Gardening Tips from Paxman’s Expert
Stella Giwisser takes us (and our soggy gardens!) into March with some helpful hints and reminders as to what we could be doing to prepare our green spaces for Spring
Over to you, Stella!
Spring is here this month! Bringing with it rebirth, rejuvenation and resurrection in the garden.
The wind is known for its ferocity in March, so keep all exposed and volatile plants well supported with stakes or canes.
Weed, dig over and mulch your soil. Weeds begin to sprout at this time of year and, by dealing with them now, it will ease the exertion needed in later months to control those pesky weeds. Additionally, the chilling wind will dry out your soil, so by digging over your soil and incorporating plenty of mulch now it will help to re-hydrate your soil ready for the year ahead.
Your lawn is very wet at this time of year so try to stay off your lawn to reduce any unwanted damage.
Make the most of the ‘good days’
Prune your Cornus, roses and any frost damaged evergreens now taking advantage of the ‘good days’ in March, but beware – there aren’t many!
The time has come to plant your summer flowering bulbs. The ideal soil temperature is 13°C as in colder soil, bulbs will not start to grow and may rot. Aim to plant dry bulbs directly after purchase.
