This domestic garden transformation in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, involved a full brief from the client before our Design team set to work. The agreed design included structured lawn planting, retained hedging, and carefully defined transitions between grass, gravel, and hard surfaces. The finished garden is both multi-level and practical.
Contemporary outdoor space
Transforming a sloping site, the design created a contemporary outdoor space defined by clean lines, layers and carefully selected materials. At the scheme’s very heart is a new split-level patio finished in sandstone/porcelain. The central steps negotiate each level change, creating a natural transition from house to garden. Drainage has been thoughtfully incorporated throughout.
Beyond the main terrace, a series of steps leads to a gravel pathway and a secondary patio. This encourages a natural flow through the space, creating distinct zones for seating and entertaining. The garden has been re-graded to form generous new lawn areas, including reinforced grass on sloped sections to ensure stability and durability. These sculpted lawns soften the hard landscaping and visually connect the lower and upper levels of the garden.

Definition and design
Gravel detailing and crisp kerb edging provide clear definition between surfaces, while new retaining walling supports the reshaped terrain and forms additional steps where required. A hand-built low fence and new boundary fencing follows the garden’s natural slope.
Altogether, this garden is a bold and functional landscape, balancing strong architectural lines with green, natural space – and a very happy homeowner, ready to enjoy it!
