We encourage each of our employees to push themselves, both in terms of learning on the job and in external training courses and certifications. This applies to operatives, supervisors and management. This Spring, we have been celebrating training achievements across the team.
Help to Grow Management Programme at Huddersfield Business School
Nathan, Landscape Manager, has now passed his Help To Grow Management course and is ready to put these skills to practice in the daily running of the business.
Taking the course at Huddersfield Business School, Nathan is keen to apply his learning in every corner of the business – from strategy to implementation. “It’s been a really useful opportunity to take a deeper look at business practices. I’m usually focused on the daily operational side of things, so it will be interesting to see how I can put my new strategic and management skills to use in the successful running of a landscape contracting company.” said Nathan.
The Help to Grow management programme is a 12-week intensive course, providing one-to-one support from a business mentor and help in developing a custom growth action plan for the business.
Nathan also recently achieved his Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) which focuses on knowing your legal responsibilities, adhering to risk management protocols and safety regulations, and improving site safety culture and compliance.
Apprentices involved in leading construction programmes
Sam Boothroyd and Alexander Lucks are currently halfway through their Landscape Apprenticeships with J Paxman Landscapes (JPL) . Combining the practical and vocational skills of daily landscaping life with the academic tools they are gaining at Myerscough College, Sam and Alex are key players in the soft landscape teams here at JPL.
They will continue to support our landscape operatives on sites like these (commercial retail park in Sutton Coldfield and a residential development in Newsome) this year alongside their college courses.
Both apprentices are keen to learn, ready to work hard and up for the everyday challenges that a career in landscape and horticulture in British weather can bring!
- Alex takes on hedge trimming
- Sam prepares the ground for turfrear lawns
Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)

Tyler (left)
SSSTS competence is vital for the management of landscape teams on UK construction sites.
Tyler Martin, one of our Senior Landscape Operatives has passed his SSSTS training and is now safety qualified under this scheme. As JPL work on major construction projects with qualified principal contractors, SSSTS is a pre-requisite for the landscape supervisory team.
Endorsed by Build UK, the certification demonstrates our supervisors understanding and commitments to working within the latest H&S requirements and Construction and Design Management regulations.
It covers working at height, manual handling, machinery and plant operation and handling hazardous substances. A qualified supervisor with SSSTS competency can then deliver safety briefings (toolbox talks) to their team, as well as create and implement risk assessments and method statements applicable to each landscape project undertaken.
Well done on successfully achieving this important safety and supervisory accreditation Tyler.
